PRAYER OF ST FRANCIS: LORD MAKE ME AN INSTRUMENT OF YOUR PEACE

Few people, if anyone at all, still remember that Francis of Assisi, as he is popularly referred to in Christendom, but particularly by the Catholic Church, had a significant role to play in the now very popular song, 'Lord Make Me An Instrument of Your Peace.' The song, initially a Catholic Christian prayer, is attributed to the 13th-century Saint Francis of Assisi.

The attribution of this song to the 13th Century saint has persisted despite the fact that Dr. Christian Renoux in 2001 demonstrated that the prayer in its present form cannot be traced back further than 1912, when it was printed in the French language in France, in a small spiritual magazine called La Clochette (The Little Bell) as an anonymous prayer.

Francis was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. He was one of seven children born to Pietro, and his wife Pica de Bourlemont. His father would later nickname him Francesco ("the Frenchman").

Prayer For Peace - St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
Where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive.
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.

AMEN.
