What is the "heart" of man

And God said, "Let US make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over..." Gen 1:16a. With a God given inner man, a spirit, humans were created in the "image" of God who gave us a HEART equipping us with the special ability to think, reason, plan and CHOOSE as the essential difference in humans and gorillas.

Proverbs says, "For as he thinketh in his HEART, so is he"

Jesus specified: "For out of the HEART proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:

From the HEART which is between your ears, a man thinketh thoughts as he chooses to trust Jesus and accept His love gift of salvation OR to choose to be a going-to-hell Jesus-Rejecting sinner.

DEFINITIONS
Greek = kardiva (Original Word), Kardia (Transliterated Word), kar-dee'-ah (Phonetic Spelling) meaning the Heart: The centre and seat of spiritual life. The SOUL or mind, as it is the fountain and seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavours. - Strongs Greek Dict.

The HEART gives a human the ability to think, plan, will, feel, worship and interact with God and other people.

Those who are not living according to God's will have hearts that are hard, darkened, rebellious, callous, unfeeling, or idolatrous. It is within the heart that God works; hence the human heart may be tender and soft or as hard as stone.

In Mark 7, Jesus clearly defined the inward man of the heart of a lost-going-to-hell-Jesus-rejecter that He clearly defined in John 3:18.

Those who are LOST will naturally do anything that they THINK they can get by with. Jesus said that, From the inward man of the heart come, evil THOUGHTS such as sexual sins, stealing, murder, adultery, greed, hate and cheating. So do evil desires, envy, lying, pride and foolishness.

Everything evil comes from inside a person's HEART. Paraphrase of Mark 7:20-23.

Until the inner man of the HEART is immediately and permanently INdwelled by God's Holy Spirit at the point of salvation, those who are lost-Jesus-rejecters must expect their HEART to dwell upon evil.

Believers are different. As clearly described by the apostle to us Gentiles in Romans 7, from the time that a human spirit is truly-born-again until physical death, a battle rages between the inner-spiritual-man and outer-physical-man.

Even under the constant influence of God's INdwelling Holy Spirit, complete reliance cannot be placed upon the HEART to always make the right CHOICES to avoid constantly committing sinS.

What does the Bible say about the Heart Of Man?

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.” Jeremiah 17:9-10 ESV.

The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. Luke 6:45 ESV.

But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 ESV.

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Psalm 51:10 ESV.

As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience. Luke 8:15 ESV.

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26 ESV.

Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life. Proverbs 4:23 ESV.

And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ Mark 12:30 ESV.

And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man's heart is evil from his youth. Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done. Genesis 8:21 ESV.

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 2 Timothy 3:16 ESV.

And he said, “There was a man who had two sons. And the younger of them said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of property that is coming to me.’ And he divided his property between them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. Luke 15:11-32 ESV.

Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. Hebrews 13:9 ESV.
